Lynn Leath designed this facility, constructed in 1998, using her years of horse experience to provide maximum mental and physical health, safety, and comfort for her top level competitive sport horses and riders. Before moving her operation to Chapel Hill, Lynn had operated NSTC in Apex, NC since 1983. "Most
horses need at least limited turn out, but the pasture needs to be safe,
and the horse needs a place to get out of the elements, so I designed
the barn with many options. When the horses are in their stalls, the
Dutch doors can be opened (or shut in the winter), yokes into the aisle
can allow them to hang their heads out and see, or the sliding doors
may be shut to avoid nipping other horses. In good weather, the horses
may be allowed to come in and out at will, so that if the weather turns
bad, or the flies begin to bother them. They are free to go into their
stalls where there is protection from the wind or rain, plenty of fresh
water, shade and a ceiling fan. When the pastures are wet, the horses
can still have access to a covered patio. Turn out may be alone, or
with a buddy, but never in groups" "After years of experience with different types of fences, we decided that the safest fencing material we could use would be a wooden post and top board, with diamond wire mesh underneath. All fields and patios are double fenced to avoid fighting over fence lines" |

The owners live on the premises, which enables them to feed the horses several times a day, which includes a night check before bedtime. Hay is stored in separate building for fire safety. Since the main barn has a capacity of only six horses, it allows them time to give each horse a great deal of individual attention. That allows for a close monitoring of the horses for any attitude changes. Any changes in their eating habits are quickly noticed. Blankets, sheets, turn out rugs can be switched when needed. Feet are picked daily, so that loose or missing shoes are noticed. "I care for all of the horses as if they were my own." Stalls are thoroughly cleaned every day, seven days a week. Manure piles are picked throughout the day and at night feed. Extensive fly control is environmentally friendly. The best and appropriate grain for each horse is fed by weight to assure the proper amount. Supplements are added when instructed by owners. The best hay available is generously fed. Change in the horse's weight is observed and discussed with the owner before any changes are made. The owners of NTSC have worked hard to create a happy and positive attitude in the barn, which extends to the employees, the riders, and their horses. "Only a happy and comfortable horse will give its best performance." |
